Apple Watch Series 11 vs Series 12: What Actually Changed
By Kalyani Lokireddy
The Apple Watch Series 12 keeps the Series 11's price, display and 24-hour battery, and spends its year on health: a redesigned Health Sensing System, a new Readiness score, and the S11 chip that brings Audio Intelligence features. If you own a Series 11, there is no hurry. If you are on a Series 9 or older, the two generations of changes start to add up.
What is new in the Series 12?
- S11 chip with double the memory, which is what enables the new on-watch intelligence features.
- Health Sensing System: Apple redesigned the sensor package with more capable optical and electrical sensors and larger, more power-efficient green LEDs.
- Readiness: a single morning score for how much you have in the tank, fed by sleep and heart data, plus a redesigned Health app with more personal guidance.
- Audio Intelligence: Live Rewind and Siri Recap, new with the S11 chip.
- Charging: 15 minutes on the charger is good for up to 12 additional hours — useful if you track sleep and charge in the morning shower window.
What stayed the same?
The things you notice daily: the always-on display at up to 2,000 nits, the case sizes and bands, up to 24 hours of battery (38 in Low Power Mode), 64 GB of storage, and the starting price of $399. Nothing about the Series 12 makes a Series 11 feel old on the wrist. Full specifications are on Apple's Series 12 page.
Should you upgrade from a Series 11?
Only if the Readiness score and the new sensor system matter to you today — recovery tracking is the one thing the Series 12 does that the Series 11 genuinely does not. For everything else the two watches are close enough that waiting a generation costs you little.
Should you upgrade from a Series 9 or older?
Here the case is stronger: you gain two to three generations of sensors, the brighter wide-angle display introduced with the Series 10 design, faster charging, and every new health feature at once. Note the baseline requirement: the Series 12 needs an iPhone 11 or later running iOS 27.
Q: Is the Apple Watch Series 12 more expensive than the Series 11?
A: No. It starts at the same $399.
Q: Is the battery better on the Series 12?
A: The headline figure is the same 24 hours (38 in Low Power Mode); charging is quicker — 15 minutes for up to 12 hours.
Q: What does the Series 12 do that the Series 11 cannot?
A: The Readiness score on the new Health Sensing System, and the S11-chip Audio Intelligence features such as Live Rewind and Siri Recap.
Q: Which iPhone does the Series 12 need?
A: An iPhone 11 or later on iOS 27 or later, per Apple.
Whichever generation is on your wrist, the iWatchly apps run on both.
