How to Make an Apple Watch Battery Last Two Days
By Kalyani Lokireddy
Most Apple Watches can get through two days on one charge if you turn off the always-on display, keep Low Power Mode ready for the second day, and stop the screen waking every time your wrist moves. Apple's own figures are 18 hours for the SE 3, 24 for the Series 11 and 42 for the Ultra 3, and those numbers assume the display is always on and every sensor is running. Change a few defaults and the gap between the rated day and a real two days closes.
This is what each setting costs, what it buys, and the order to try them in.
What drains an Apple Watch fastest?
The display, by a wide margin, then cellular, then continuous sensors. An always-on display keeps the screen lit at low brightness all day. Cellular on the watch, when the iPhone is out of range, is the second cost, because the watch is now its own phone. Background heart-rate readings, blood-oxygen readings and long GPS workouts come next. Notifications and app refreshes are small individually and add up.
Which settings to change first
- Always On. Settings, then Display and Brightness, then Always On, off. The screen lights on wrist raise or tap, as it did before Series 5. This is the single biggest saving for most people.
- Wake Screen. Settings, then General, then Wake Screen. If the screen lights whenever you move your arm, turn off Wake on Wrist Raise, or shorten how long it stays on after a tap. Apple recommends this specifically when the display activates more than you want.
- Brightness. One notch down is rarely noticed outdoors and saves all day.
- Background App Refresh. On the iPhone's Watch app, General, then Background App Refresh. Leave it on for apps whose complications you read; turn it off for the rest.
- Workout Power Saving Mode. Watch app, then Workout. For walking and running it switches off the heart-rate sensor during the workout. Calorie estimates get rougher, so use it for long days out rather than training you track closely.
- Notifications. Every buzz lights the screen. Mirror only the apps whose alerts you act on from the wrist.
What does Low Power Mode turn off?
Low Power Mode, in Control Center or under Settings, then Battery, turns off the always-on display, limits Wi-Fi and cellular, and stops background sensor readings such as heart rate. Calls, messages and workouts still work. Use it as the second-day setting: normal use on day one, Low Power Mode from the morning of day two. On an Ultra 3 the same mode is what Apple counts on for its 72-hour figure.
How do you keep the battery healthy over years?
Two settings, both under Settings, then Battery, then Battery Health. Optimized Battery Charging learns your routine and holds the charge below 100 percent until shortly before you usually take the watch off the charger. Optimized Charge Limit, on the Ultra, caps charging at 80 percent on the days it predicts you will not need more. Both reduce time spent at full charge, which is what ages a lithium battery.
Temperature matters too. Apple's operating range is 0 to 35 degrees Celsius. Charging pauses on its own if the watch gets hot, and a watch left on a car dashboard or a windowsill in summer loses capacity faster than one that is used hard.
A charging routine that works
Charge while you shower and get dressed, not overnight. Twenty to thirty minutes on a fast charger takes a Series 11 or Ultra 3 from around 20 to around 80 percent, which is enough for the day, and it leaves the night free for sleep tracking. If you track sleep, charge in the morning; if you do not, charge at night and turn the always-on display off during the day.
Q: Does a black watch face save battery?
A: Slightly, on the OLED screen every model uses, because black pixels are off. It matters less than turning off always-on.
Q: Should I let the battery drain to zero?
A: No. Lithium batteries prefer shallow cycles. Charging from 20 percent is kinder than from empty.
Q: Is it worth replacing the battery on an older watch?
A: Check Battery Health first. Below about 80 percent maximum capacity, a replacement from Apple restores the rated day; above it, the settings here will do more than new hardware.
Q: Why did the battery get worse after an update?
A: The first day or two after a watchOS update, the watch reindexes and re-syncs in the background. Judge it after a week.
The short version
Turn off Always On, tame Wake Screen, use Low Power Mode on the second day, and charge in the morning with Optimized Battery Charging on. Two days is normal after that, not an achievement.
