watchOS 27: What Changed on Your Apple Watch, and What to Try First
By Kalyani Lokireddy
watchOS 27 arrived on 14 September 2026 for Apple Watch Series 9 and later, Ultra 2 and later, and the SE 3. Its four changes you will notice in the first hour are a conversational Siri, a single-finger tap that opens the Smart Stack, an app grid that reorders itself around what you use, and a Find My app that finally puts people, devices and items in one place. The rest is smaller, and some of it is health work that only shows up when it has something to say.
Here is what each change does, in the order you are likely to meet it.
What does the new Siri do on the wrist?
Siri now holds a back-and-forth conversation instead of answering one question and forgetting it. It can use what is on the screen, and it can search your Mail, Messages, Notes, Reminders and Calendar on the paired iPhone and relay the answer to the watch. Ask when your next dentist appointment is, then "move it an hour later", and both steps work. There is a new Siri Modular watch face with a dedicated Siri complication and a rectangular slot that mirrors the top widget of your Smart Stack, so the same face carries the assistant and whatever it thinks you need next.
How does the one-finger Smart Stack gesture work?
Raise your wrist and tap your index finger and thumb together once. The Smart Stack opens, and repeating the tap moves through its widgets and selects one. It is the same pinch the Double Tap feature introduced, now doing more with a single tap, and it means you can act on a widget while your other hand is holding a bag, a pram or a rail. The Smart Stack itself gains suggestion widgets that appear only when relevant: where you parked, a birthday today, a transit card balance that dropped, a Noise warning.
What is the dynamic app grid?
Press the Digital Crown and the grid now leads with the apps you use most and most recently, instead of a fixed alphabetical or honeycomb layout you had to arrange yourself. If you rely on two or three apps, they are at the top within a day. If you liked your old layout, it takes some getting used to; the ordering is Apple's, not yours.
What changed in Find My?
People, Devices and Items used to be three separate experiences on the watch. They are one app now, built around a map, so finding your keys and finding a friend are the same three taps.
What is new for health?
Cycle Tracking learns to recognise the pattern of perimenopause. From age 40, the app can notify you when cycle changes suggest it, and it adds notifications for postmenopausal bleeding, which is worth a conversation with a doctor. Both are quiet features: nothing to set up beyond keeping Cycle Tracking on, nothing on screen until there is a reason.
Smaller changes worth knowing
- Treadmill workouts calculate distance more accurately, and the route map shown after an outdoor workout is cleaner.
- Liquid Glass, the translucent design from watchOS 26, has been tuned for readability, with more even refraction and higher contrast. Text over busy watch faces is easier to read than it was a year ago.
- Apps launch faster after an update; the change is under the hood, and third-party apps benefit without being rebuilt.
How do you install it?
On the iPhone, open the Watch app, then General, then Software Update. Or on the watch, open Settings, then General, then Software Update. The watch needs at least 50 percent charge and to be on its charger, and the iPhone needs iOS 27. Give it half an hour and leave both devices near each other.
Q: Which Apple Watch models get watchOS 27?
A: Series 9, 10 and 11; Ultra 2 and 3; and the SE 3. Series 8 and earlier, and the SE 2, stay on watchOS 26.
Q: Does the new Siri need a paid plan?
A: No. It is part of the update. It does need a compatible iPhone running iOS 27, because the searches across your apps run there.
Q: Can I turn off the single-tap gesture?
A: Yes. It lives with the other gesture settings under Settings, then Gestures, on the watch.
Q: Will my third-party apps keep working?
A: Yes. Apps built for watchOS 26 run unchanged. Ones that adopt the new Smart Stack behaviour will say so in their update notes.
The short version
Update, then try three things: ask Siri a two-step question, pinch once to open the Smart Stack, and press the crown to see the new grid. Everything else arrives on its own when it is relevant.
