Apple Watch Readiness Score: What the Number Means
By Kalyani Lokireddy
The Apple Watch Readiness score is a number from 0 to 10 that says how ready your body is to push hard today. It is built from three things: your recent activity, your overnight vitals and your sleep. It runs only on Apple Watch Series 12 and Apple Watch Ultra 4, for people aged 13 and older.
What do the four bands mean?
- Go For It (8–10): a good day for a hard workout.
- Ready (5–7): train as normal.
- Pace Yourself (2–4): keep the effort moderate.
- Recover (0–1): a day for rest.
What goes into the score?
- Activity: active calories, workout effort ratings and Training Load. A jump in activity lowers the score; steady or reduced activity raises it.
- Vitals: overnight heart rate, respiratory rate, wrist temperature, heart rate variability and blood oxygen, plus daytime heart rate. Readings that are off your normal range lower the score; higher heart rate variability raises it.
- Sleep: last night's Sleep Score and your recent history.
The score is not fixed at wake-up. It updates during the day, so it can drop after a hard workout.
Why don't I have a Readiness score?
Apple needs a baseline first. Check each of these:
- Your watch is a Series 12 or Ultra 4. watchOS 27 on an older watch does not add Readiness.
- Height, weight and age are filled in, in the Fitness app on iPhone.
- Activity is set up.
- Sleep and Overnight Vitals are set up.
- You have worn the watch to bed for at least 7 nights, including last night.
Where do I see it?
Open the Readiness app on the watch, and tap Activity, Vitals or Sleep for the detail behind the number. On iPhone, open the Fitness app and tap Readiness near the bottom.
Should I trust it?
Treat it as a guide. Apple says Readiness does not account for existing conditions or medications, and it should not be the only thing that decides whether exercise is safe for you. Apple's own explanation is in Understand your readiness score on Apple Watch, and the launch details are in the Apple Newsroom announcement.
Frequently asked questions
Q: Does the Apple Watch Series 11 get Readiness? A: No. Readiness needs the Health Sensing System in the Series 12 and Ultra 4.
Q: Why did my score drop in the afternoon? A: It updates through the day. A hard workout or a change in daytime heart rate can lower it.
Q: How long until my first score? A: At least 7 nights of sleeping with the watch on, with Sleep and Overnight Vitals set up.
